WABE’s Dual Language and OCDE Project GLAD® Special Interest Groups are pleased to announce the Winter Institute in Vancouver, WA focused on highly effective models and strategies for dual language education. Keynote speakers and presenters will focus on:

  • Use of OCDE Project GLAD® strategies to support multilingual learners
  • Effective models and strategies for dual language programs
  • Integration of OCDE Project GLAD® in dual language programming

Workshop sessions will be 90 minutes in length and we will announce those sessions 8/1. Come to share, learn, and collaborate with others who are working to serve our diverse learners in Washington State. See details below to register for one or both days.

Friday Morning:

Diane Tedick, Ph.D. – University of Minnesota, Coordinator of Dual Language and Immersion Programs

Diane J. Tedick is a Professor in the Second Language Education program at the University of Minnesota, where she has been a language teacher educator and researcher for nearly 30 years. She has conducted research and published on student language development in immersion and dual language classrooms, content-based language instruction, as well as immersion/dual language teacher education and professional development. She provides professional development experiences for immersion, bilingual, and language teachers in the U.S. and internationally. Her publications have appeared in journals such as Applied Linguistics; Language, Culture and Curriculum; The Modern Language Journal; and the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism. She is also founding co-editor (now sole editor) of an international research journal published by John Benjamins, the Journal of Immersion and Content-Based Language Education. In 2013 and 2016 she received the U.S. Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education and in 2015 an award from the University of Minnesota that established her as a Distinguished Teaching Professor.

Saturday Morning: 

Diana Pinkston-Stewart, Dual Language Education of New Mexico, Project GLAD® Key Trainer

Diana began her career working with migrant farmworkers and their families in the fields of Missouri and through this work, found her calling in bilingual education. (That’s another story!) She has had twenty five amazing years in New Mexico working with and learning from the students, families and teachers of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in New Mexico as a dual immersion teacher, instructional coach and administrator. She currently works for Dual Language Education of New Mexico as a Program Coordinator and trainer of OCDE Project GLAD® and Literacy Squared®. She is passionate about the growing field of biliteracy instruction and the power of multilingual education to teach to the academic, linguistic and social-emotional potential of all our students.

Thursday Dual Language School Visit

The School Visit will include two dual language immersion schools on November 29. We will visit Pioneer Elementary School’s 90/10 Two-Way Spanish K-5 DLE Program. We will also visit Wy’east middle School’s DLE Program, specifically math and Spanish language arts classes for 6th and 7th graders. Evergreen Public Schools will share about their implementation journey – challenges and successes – and answer questions. Departure time is 7:30 am and we will return by 3:00 pm. Transportation is provided and the visit will include lunch. Cost is $125 and is limited to 30 participants.

Meals

Meals will not be provided for the institutes. During our lunch breaks, there are many local area restaurants and eateries are located in the area.

Clock Hours

Clock hours will be provided through WAESOL for this event. A total of 16.5 hours will be possible including the school visit. Daily sign in will be required. Click here for more information from WAESOL regarding the clock hour process.

Vendor Registration

At the Winter Institute, we have 10 booth spaces available. We expect 250-300 participants from Washington and Oregon. You’ll have time for networking with attendees during the hour before the keynote each morning, during passing times, during our 90 minute networking lunch break and you’re also invited to attend workshops for more connection with our audience.

Sponsorships include branding on our e-marketing messages to our entire audience and the opportunity to welcome the entire audience on Friday or Saturday morning before our keynote begins.
